Curve style for nodes that reference themselves has significantly changed between v9 and v11

Taking the simplest possible graph here to demonstrate the style change with self referencing. curve: basis chosen:

Perhaps better demonstrated by self referencing within larger graphs where we can see rather large loops, extending subgraph boxes too:

The large cumbersome self referencing loops are I think not as visually appealing as those in v9. Perhaps this comes along with the ride of improved curve construction overall, I don't know.
