Font rendering cannot properly load variable weight fonts

What happened?

Issue reproducible using these font files: https://github.com/google/material-design-icons/tree/master/variablefont

The font loads perfectly with the name Material Symbols Sharp and regular weight. Other weights the font supports do not load

What is the expected behavior?

The font to load in supported weights (in this case, bold)
