I installed the osx-compose-key code on a MacBookPro running Sierra with Karabiner-Elements already installed. Placed the karabiner.json file in the right place (actually had it previously on ˜/.config/karabiner/configuration but now also a copy in ˜/.karabiner/configuration) and the DefaultKeyBinding.dict as well.
I have a US keyboard and I am binding the Compose Key onto Right-Option (therefore in Karabiner-Elements I have right_option bound to non_us_backlash).
Rebooted and things are not what I expected. So here are the questions:
under what keyboard should osx-compose-key work? I tried it with the standard US Keyboard and it does not work. It works with "US International" but this keyboard has dead keys, so in fact it simple works the same since pressing right_option+letter+accent does the same as pressing letter+accent. It also does not seem to work with "US International w/o dead keys"...
Is there a specific keyboard the bindings were setup for?
using "US International) it seems to work, but only on Mac OSX apps. Tried it with XQuartz in an Xterminal and it also does not work. This is troublesome because almost all I do is on xterm and Emacs (From XQuartz).
I wonder if I am doing something wrong... Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
ps - Until Sierra came along I was quite happy using a combination of Karabiner and US Custom keyboard layout (http://uscustom.sourceforge.net/). Unfortunately Sierra broke Karabiner and all hell broke loose.

Actually, since 0.90.71, the configuration needs to reside at ~/.config/karabiner/karabiner.json. Can you try to move the file there? I also use a US keyboard (not US International) and have my right_option bound to non_us_backslash.
I am not sure about any problem with XQuartz, as I've never attempted to use any of those applications with my compose key shortcuts.
